A 26-year-old man has been arrested in Salford in connection with a spate of criminal damage targeting houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) across Greater Manchester, bringing the total number of arrests to seven.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) launched an investigation into dozens of suspected incidents across Salford, Tameside and Stockport this month. The force previously said it had received 46 reports of criminal damage to properties that are either HMOs, or properties being mistaken for HMOs, since October 5.
In some of the incidents, homes had 'no HMO' sprayed onto their front doors. Cars were smashed and windows were put through.
Arrest on Valencia Road
Earlier today (Tuesday, October 27), officers on patrol arrested the man on Valencia Road in Salford. He will be questioned on suspicion of causing criminal damage on Littleton Road on October 22, a GMP spokesperson said.
The arrest is the seventh made in the investigation into the incidents.
Exploitation of vulnerable people
Chief Superintendent Marcus Noden said police believe that vulnerable people, including children, have been exploited and paid to damage buildings. He said: "Our relentless pursuit of those causing or facilitating this recent spate of damage is not letting up as we continue to explore multiple lines of enquiry."
"One area of focus continues to be our belief that vulnerable people - including children - are being exploited and paid to damage buildings. If you know anything that could help us, we're continuing to urge you to come forward and speak to us."
"The information you provide us with could form a vital part of helping us piece this together. You can report to GMP online or by calling 101."
If members of the public would rather not speak to police, they can give information completely anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on freephone 0800 555 111, or by filling out a simple and secure form on their website.
