Septic Truck Shattered by Train in Virginia, Driver Hurt

A fully loaded septic truck was obliterated when a freight train collided with it at a railroad crossing in Chesapeake, Virginia, on Thursday afternoon. The crash triggered a hazardous materials scare as debris and foul-smelling waste exploded across the road, all captured on camera.

Collision Details

The violent impact occurred on Yadkin Road when the truck attempted to cross the tracks but found itself directly in the path of an eastbound Norfolk Southern train. Witness Azuriah O’Daniel recorded the terrifying moment the train’s horn blared as the truck rolled onto the crossing seconds before disaster struck.

The locomotive slammed into the rear of the tanker with devastating force, ripping the septic tank completely away from the cab and hurling both sections into a ditch beside the tracks. Hoses were blasted from the vehicle, mangled metal scattered across the roadway, and the truck’s contents spewed over the surrounding area.

Injuries and Aftermath

The truck driver was rushed to the hospital with initially life-threatening injuries but later stabilized. No injuries were reported among the train crew. Authorities confirmed hazardous materials at the scene but stated no immediate danger to the public. The crash shut down both directions of Yadkin Road for hours as emergency crews responded.

O’Daniel, who was filming trains as a hobby, described the horrifying seconds leading up to the collision. “I didn’t even see the truck at first until he was already going over the tracks,” he said. “And then he came over the tracks, and the train was already right here. It busted the septic tank, the hoses fell off, and the impact was crazy.”

Investigation

Investigators said preliminary findings suggest the truck failed to stop at a posted stop sign before crossing. O’Daniel noted the crossing is private and lacks safety arms or flashing warning lights. He urged drivers to always stop, look, and listen at train crossings. Police have not released the driver’s identity.
