School bus crashes into Newport bridge; three children hurt

Three children have been taken to hospital after a school bus crashed into a railway bridge in Newport, Wales, this morning.

The incident occurred on Tregare Street in the Barnardsown area just before 8am, according to South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Dramatic images show the roof of the double decker bus completely torn off following the collision with the bridge, which has a height limit of 3.9 metres.

Police and emergency response

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "Officers attended along with crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service and the collision involved a school bus and a railway bridge. Three children have sustained injuries and will be attending hospital for treatment; their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening."

Jo Townsend, whose son was one of the three children requiring hospital treatment, described receiving a call from him at 7:45am. She said: "I wasn't there. I got a call at 7:45am from my son saying the bus had crashed. I got dressed as fast as possible and rushed to the site of the accident. The area was taped off and the images were shocking and of course worried me. The nursery Lullabyz were great and opened up for paramedics to start seeing kids."

She added: "There were two fire engines, an ambulance and police cars when I got there. So I saw all the lights before getting to the site. When I got there I found my son in Lullabyz having observations. They then wanted to get him up to the Grange [University Hospital] so we have been here for observations since."

Rail disruption and recovery

The crash caused significant disruption to train services, with lines blocked near Newport station. Trains running to, from and through the station faced cancellations and delays of up to an hour, with disruption expected until about 11am, according to Transport for Wales. Rail operators affected included Cross Country, Great Western Railway and Transport for Wales.

Network Rail said: "Our thoughts are with those affected by the incident on East Usk Road this morning. The railway was temporarily closed for safety checks. Train services have now resumed, but there will be residual delays while the timetable returns to normal."
