Good Morning Britain star Richard Madeley is set to trade the comfort of the ITV sofa for the grey walls of one of the world's most controversial prisons in a new feature-length documentary for Channel 5. The programme, titled Richard Madeley On Murder Row, will air later this year and offers a rare glimpse inside the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) in El Salvador.
Inside CECOT: The Mega-Prison at the Heart of El Salvador's Gang War
The 69-year-old presenter will explore the vast maximum-security facility, which has become the cornerstone of President Nayib Bukele's crackdown on gang violence. Richard was granted unprecedented access to the entire site, a privilege that took months of negotiation to secure. He will speak with inmates living under the strict regime and interview guards responsible for enforcing harsh rules to maintain control over the incarcerated felons.
Beyond the prison walls, Richard will visit the tough urban areas surrounding CECOT, home to violent gangs. He will investigate the effects of the prison's presence on these communities and uncover the human realities behind the headlines.
Richard Madeley's Reaction to the Opportunity
Expressing his enthusiasm for the project, Richard said: "I was genuinely thrilled to be asked to front this film for Channel 5. It's not every day you're given the chance to step inside a place as extraordinary and talked about as CECOT." He added: "What struck me straight away was the sheer scale of it, and the stories behind it. In meeting the people who run the prison and those living inside it, what unfolds is a fascinating and often surprising look at justice, security, and the human realities behind the headlines. It's been a remarkable experience."
Production Team's Perspective
Guy Davies, Consultant Editor for Commissioning at Channel 5, commented: "This access to CECOT was a tantalising prospect. Richard is, at heart, a first-class popular journalist and we were thrilled to get the chance for him to serve some time there. I think viewers will be very surprised by the results." Andy Dunn, Senior Executive Producer at ITN Productions, added: "Gaining access to CECOT, the most secretive and notorious prison in the world, took months of negotiation. It was really important for Richard to experience the extreme conditions there first hand, and he takes us on a compelling and unique journey as he considers the effectiveness and ethics of such a harsh regime."
Background on CECOT
Last year, it was reported that former US President Donald Trump had sent 250 gang members to CECOT, which has been labelled the "world's worst prison." Located in Tecoluca, El Salvador, the mega-prison holds tens of thousands of inmates, many of whom are locked up on bare metal bunks without mattresses. Conditions have been described as inhumane, with cells containing only two toilets and a basin, offering no privacy. There are no windows, and guards monitor prisoners through holes in the mesh ceiling. The regime is unlike anything seen in the UK prison system, with inmates enduring cramped spaces on metal bunks.
