A person has been rushed to hospital after a stabbing on Portobello Road in west London, forcing the closure of the world-famous market.
London Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to reports of the stabbing at 1:57 a.m. on Friday. A spokesperson said: “We treated a patient at the scene and took them to a major trauma centre by road.”
Market Remains Closed
The incident has meant Portobello Road Market remains closed until further notice. In a statement online, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea said: “Due to police activity following incidents on Portobello Road overnight, opening the markets and cleaning up the streets nearby will be delayed. Our staff are waiting and ready to open things up as soon as possible.”
Police have been contacted about the incident and for an update on the stabbing victim's condition. Pictures from the scene show a police cordon and officers on the scene. The cordon is at the junction of Cambridge Gardens and Portobello Road, sealing off some of the adjacent shops and pavement towards Oxford Gardens, MyLondon reported. Access via Acklam Road is also reportedly blocked.
World-Famous Market
Portobello Road is one of the world’s most famous street markets and is visited by tens of thousands of Londoners and tourists each week. On Fridays and Saturdays, the market stalls stretch a mile along Portobello Road and round the corner into Golborne Road.
