Nottinghamshire Police has issued a new update on the investigation into the shooting of a police officer in the city centre over the weekend. The officer, who sustained a gunshot wound to the foot after approaching a man and a woman at a bus stop shortly before 5am, remains in hospital and is "in the expert care of medical professionals," according to a statement released at 10:35pm on Wednesday, October 21.
Seven Arrests and Extended Questioning
The statement confirmed that a court has authorised detectives additional time to interview certain suspects in the case. A total of seven individuals have been arrested, but Detective Chief Superintendent Richard Bull said the investigation is far from concluded.
Bull said: "The investigation team continues to work tirelessly to establish exactly what happened before, during and after this appalling incident. I would like to thank them, along with colleagues from other police forces, for their continued support and assistance."
Details of the Arrests
That same evening, officers intercepted a vehicle in Radford and apprehended its three passengers. Among them was a 27-year-old woman, detained on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. She remains the suspect covered by a warrant permitting officers to continue questioning.
The vehicle's remaining two passengers, a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, were detained on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both have subsequently been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.
Further Arrests and Appeal
A 30-year-old man apprehended in Bedfordshire during the early hours of Monday, October 19 was similarly interviewed on suspicion of assisting an offender. He has subsequently been recalled to prison for violating the conditions of his licence. A fifth arrest occurred on Tuesday, October 20, when a 21-year-old woman was apprehended in south-east London on suspicion of assisting an offender. She has now been released on conditional bail while further enquiries are conducted.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 21, a 35-year-old man was detained in Bulwell on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender. A seventh arrest followed that evening when a 33-year-old woman was apprehended in Aspley, also on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender. Both individuals remain in police custody.
Bull added: "It remains crucial that anyone with information about this incident comes forward and speaks to us." He also stressed that the officer has requested privacy at this time, and the force asks that the media respects that wish. A force spokesperson expressed gratitude for "everyone for their heartfelt messages of support and well wishes for the officer."
