A man has been shot dead by police in Westminster after allegedly brandishing two knives. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, is not being treated as terrorism.
The suspect was challenged by officers near Great Scotland Yard, close to Whitehall and Trafalgar Square, just before 11.30pm. Police said the man produced two knives and was first subdued with a stun gun before being shot by a firearms officer.
Despite attempts to save his life, the man was declared dead at the scene. No officers or members of the public were injured. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a mandatory investigation into the shooting.
The Met stated that officers from both the Metropolitan Police and City of London Police were involved. The IOPC confirmed it is investigating the circumstances, including the man's health records, to establish why he was carrying knives.
