Police seize e-bike after canal chase in South Wales

An 18-year-old man from Briton Ferry was apprehended by officers from Neath Neighbourhood Policing Team after attempting to flee along Neath Canal while riding an electric bike. The incident occurred as part of Operation Grebe, a new initiative targeting the illegal use of bikes across South Wales.

Operation Grebe launched over public concerns

Operation Grebe was launched in response to public concerns, particularly over e-bike users riding illegally, using bikes that are not road legal, or becoming involved in criminal activity, including drug dealing.

During the encounter, an officer told the man he had "attempted to make off" from police in what the officer described as a "known drug dealing spot", adding that he had tried to "goad" officers into a chase. The man was stopped and searched under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Bike seized and rider reported

The electric bike was subsequently seized, and the rider has been reported for a number of traffic offences.

Sergeant Molly Llewellyn said: "The Neighbourhood Policing Team will continue to proactively target and disrupt illegal activity that contributes to crime and anti-social behaviour within our communities. These issues have a significant impact on residents and the wider public."

She added: "Please continue to report concerns and incidents to us, as this information helps the team identify problem areas, develop intelligence, and take positive action to keep our communities safe."
