A Metropolitan Police officer is facing serious misconduct proceedings after footage emerged showing the Tasering of an Afghan refugee during an arrest in a west London convenience store.
The incident, which occurred in Uxbridge on September 14 last year, has prompted an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after video evidence revealed concerning details about the officer's conduct.
Confrontation in Uxbridge Shop
The altercation began when police responded to reports of a man allegedly attempting to steal from a local shop. Body-worn camera footage shows the officer confronting the man, who had recently arrived in the UK from Afghanistan and spoke limited English.
According to the IOPC investigation, the situation escalated rapidly when the officer deployed his Taser on the man multiple times during the arrest. The refugee was subsequently taken to a west London police station following the incident.
Independent Investigation Reveals Concerns
IOPC Regional Director Mel Palmer confirmed that their investigation identified several areas of concern regarding the officer's use of force and communication during the encounter.
"After reviewing the body-worn video and other evidence, we found the officer may have breached police professional standards regarding use of force, authority, respect and courtesy, and duties and responsibilities," Palmer stated.
The investigation also highlighted potential issues with how the officer interacted with the man, given his limited understanding of English and recent arrival from Afghanistan.
Formal Misconduct Proceedings Initiated
The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that the officer will now face a misconduct hearing, though the exact date has yet to be scheduled. The hearing will determine whether the officer breached professional standards and what disciplinary measures should follow.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson acknowledged the proceedings, stating: "We are aware of the misconduct hearing relating to this incident and will cooperate fully with the process."
