A police officer responding to an emergency call was driving on the wrong side of the road at 60mph before striking a woman, a court has been informed. Thames Valley Police officer Philip Duthie is charged with causing death by careless driving after colliding with pedestrian Kimberley Cameron, Westminster Magistrates' Court heard on Tuesday.
Incident Details
The Independent Office for Police Conduct, which previously investigated the case, stated that the 27-year-old victim died as a result of a road traffic collision at the scene on the A41 Bicester Road in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Duthie, now 41, was responding to a report of a serious incident on 16 April 2021.
Prosecution's Account
The prosecution told the court that in the lead-up to the collision, the officer had been driving on the wrong side of the road at 60mph in a 40mph zone. They added that his view had been obstructed by a van as Ms Cameron crossed the road, who was believed to have been jogging.
New Evidence and Charges
The Independent Office for Police Conduct reinvestigated the case when 'new evidence' came to light, leading the Crown Prosecution Service to authorise a charge of causing death by careless driving. At the brief hearing, Duthie elected for his case to be heard by a judge and jury at a crown court.
Bail and Next Appearance
District Judge Michael Snow released Duthie, of Chappell Way in Leighton Buzzard, on unconditional bail ahead of his next appearance at the Old Bailey on May 26. Kevin and Liane Cameron described their daughter as 'an amazing young woman, who took every opportunity in life to push her limits and live life to the full'.
