Police manhunt after officer shot in Porepunkah

A quiet afternoon in regional Victoria turned into a scene of dramatic violence as a police officer was shot during what began as a routine traffic stop in Porepunkah, sparking one of the largest manhunts the area has seen in recent years.

Officer Shot in Brazen Daylight Attack

The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon when officers from Victoria Police attempted to pull over a vehicle in the small town of Porepunkah, approximately 300 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. According to police sources, the situation escalated rapidly when the driver, identified as 31-year-old Dezi Freeman, allegedly produced a firearm and opened fire.

"One of our officers has sustained a gunshot wound during this incident," a Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed. "The officer was immediately transported to hospital and is currently receiving medical treatment. Their condition is described as stable."

Massive Police Response Underway

Following the shooting, Freeman allegedly fled the scene on foot, prompting an immediate and substantial police response. Multiple units including the Critical Incident Response Team, Air Wing, and Dog Squad have been deployed to the area.

Local residents have reported seeing heavily armed police officers conducting door-to-door searches and establishing roadblocks throughout the region. The Air Wing helicopter has been circling overhead, using thermal imaging technology to scan the dense bushland surrounding the town.

Public Warning: Do Not Approach

Victoria Police have issued a stern warning to the public, emphasising that Freeman should be considered armed and dangerous.

"We are urging members of the public not to approach this man under any circumstances," the police statement read. "If you see him, immediately contact Triple Zero (000). He is believed to be in possession of a firearm and represents a significant risk to community safety."

Community in Lockdown

The normally tranquil community of Porepunkah has been thrown into chaos, with local schools implementing lockdown procedures and residents advised to remain indoors with doors and windows locked.

One local business owner, who wished to remain anonymous, described the scene as "terrifying" and "something you never expect to happen in a small country town."

Police have established a significant exclusion zone around the search area, stretching from Porepunkah toward the nearby Mount Buffalo National Park. Motorists are being diverted away from the region as the intensive search continues into the evening hours.

Ongoing Investigation

As darkness falls, police resources are being bolstered with additional officers brought in from surrounding districts. The search operation is expected to continue throughout the night, with police determined to locate and apprehend the suspect before he can potentially leave the area.

Anyone with information about Freeman's whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers immediately as this dangerous situation continues to unfold.
