A man from west Wales was discovered collapsed on his bathroom floor by police after lying there for four days. Mark Causey, 61, from Kilgetty in Pembrokeshire, had been home alone while his wife Rosalind visited her mother in Margam, where he had planned to carry out DIY work.
Rosalind became concerned when Mark failed to contact her, and checking their home webcam via her mobile phone, she saw footage of him looking dishevelled and staggering before disappearing from view. She called police for a welfare check, and they found Mark collapsed in the bathroom. Paramedics treated him as semi-conscious and severely dehydrated, and he was rushed to Withybush General Hospital.
A CT scan revealed lesions on his brain, and he was later diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer. Doctors told the couple that surgery or a biopsy was not possible because the tumour had spread with spider-like tendrils throughout his brain, and that Mark had only eight to twelve weeks to live.
Despite his determination to fight, including regaining the ability to walk, a follow-up MRI scan showed the tumour had doubled in size. The family explored private hyperthermic therapy in London, which uses heat to kill cancer cells, but the cancer was too extensive and fast-growing. Mark died in September 2024, surrounded by loved ones at home.
His funeral celebrated his love of motorcycles, with his coffin carried on a motorcycle hearse, followed by more than 100 bikers from the local community. In his memory, Rosalind is taking part in Brain Tumour Research's 99 miles in November challenge to raise funds for research into the disease.
