Two police officers were injured after a crash on the world's oldest seaside pleasure pier on the Isle of Wight, leaving their car dangling precariously over the English Channel.
Firefighters cut out the two officers who were trapped inside the police car after it narrowly avoided plunging into the water from Ryde Pier. Multiple emergency services, including the ambulance service, fire teams and the coastguard, attended the scene at the 19th-century pier at around 10am on Tuesday.
Two vehicles involved in the crash
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed that two vehicles were involved in the crash. There were no injuries suffered in the crash, which is believed to have been with a taxi. The force did not say if the officers were in pursuit at the time of the collision.
History of Ryde Pier
Ryde Pier, designed by John Kent of Southampton, allows cars to drive on it with a strict 10mph speed limit. It was officially opened on 26 July 1814, making it the world's oldest surviving seaside pleasure pier.
The Ryde Pier features in the 2005 supernatural horror film Fragile, starring Calista Flockhart. It appears briefly in a scene where Flockhart's character is driven along after arriving from the mainland.
