Police Arrest 38-Year-Old Over Celtic Pitch Invasion

Police have made another arrest in connection with the disorder that followed Celtic's Scottish Premiership title victory last month. A 38-year-old man has been charged with a breach of the peace offence after the pitch invasion at Celtic Park and subsequent unrest in Glasgow city centre.

The incident occurred on Saturday, May 16, when Celtic defeated Hearts 3-1 to secure the league title. Fans stormed the pitch at Celtic Park, and later, disorder broke out in the Trongate area of Glasgow. This marks the fifth consecutive year that football supporters have caused disruption in the city centre after the Premiership conclusion.

Two police officers were injured during the disturbances, and 14 people were initially arrested. The latest arrest brings the total number of those charged to 15. The 38-year-old suspect has been released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

Police Scotland continues its extensive investigation into the disorder, which required more than 900 officers to manage. Chief Constable Jo Farrell described the behaviour of some fans as “an embarrassment,” while First Minister John Swinney and other political leaders condemned the actions that marred the end-of-season celebrations.

A Police Scotland spokesperson stated: “Officers investigating the disorder on the pitch following Celtic’s Premiership title win on Saturday, May 16 have made a further arrest. A 38-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a breach of the peace offence. He was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date. Extensive enquiries remain ongoing to identify those involved in the criminality at Parkhead, as well as the disorder in the Trongate area of Glasgow after the game, with more arrests expected to follow in the coming days and weeks.”

Authorities have set up a Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) to encourage the public to submit information directly. The portal can be accessed via the Police Scotland website. Anyone with footage or photos that could assist the investigation is urged to upload them using the online form. Information can also be passed to Police Scotland by calling 101 and quoting Operation Gristaline. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The investigation remains active, and further arrests are anticipated as police work to identify all those involved in the pitch invasion and city centre disorder.
