Police have appealed for help from walkers following the discovery of a newborn baby girl's body on the banks of the Menai Strait in Bangor on September 27. A postmortem examination by Home Office pathologist Dr Brian Rodgers indicated the baby may have been in the water for up to a few weeks.
Appeal to local residents
Officers from North Wales Police are asking anyone who routinely walked in the Siliwen Road and Ashley Fields areas of Bangor between August 30 and September 27 to contact them. A spokesperson for the force said: "Anyone who has routinely walked in the Siliwen Road and Ashley Fields areas of Bangor between 30 August and 27 September are asked to contact police."
Superintendent Llinos Davies said officers are continuing to work "tirelessly" to conduct local enquiries and liaise with national experts to determine what happened to the baby girl.
Photos and videos sought
Supt Davies also asked anyone with photos or videos taken in and around the Menai Strait shoreline in Siliwen between August 30 and September 27 to upload them to the major incident public portal. "Any image could be relevant to our investigation, even if you think it might be insignificant it will be reviewed to ascertain whether it is of value to our enquiries," she said.
Dedicated support line for mother
A dedicated phone line has been created for the mother of the baby girl to reach out to a specialist who will be available at all times for her to call or text. Supt Davies said: "We understand that you may be scared to come forward, but we urge you to contact us. Your welfare remains our utmost concern.
"We have created a phone number specifically for you to call for help with a specialist who can support you confidentially. Please, if you are seeing this message, call or text 07974 241223.
"When you call, you will speak directly to a trained specialist whose role is simply to listen and help. This is not a conversation you need to be afraid of. You will be treated with compassion, dignity and respect.
"If making that call feels too difficult, please consider telling somebody you trust. A friend, family member, neighbour, healthcare professional, or anyone who can help you reach out."
The phone number is strictly only to be used by the mother to seek specialist help. Anyone with immediate concerns is asked to contact police on 101, quoting Operation Melex. A Major Incident Public Portal has also been created for anyone with information to contact police directly, and the independent charity Crimestoppers can be called anonymously. Alternatively, the health board's Peoples Enquiry and resolution service can be reached between Monday-Friday 10am-4pm on 03000 851 234.
