A 75-year-old pensioner has denied poisoning her neighbour with ant killer, appearing in crown court for the first time to face the charge. Sally Beaney, from Netley Abbey near Southampton, Hampshire, is accused of 'maliciously administering poison with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy' Matthew Perry on October 13, 2025.
Self-Defence or Accident Claim
During the hearing at Southampton Crown Court, Beaney's barrister, James Kellan, stated that her defence is one of self-defence or accident. Judge Bill Mousley released Beaney on unconditional bail, ordering her to appear for a three-day trial on March 17, 2027. Beaney, who wore a black cardigan and glasses in court, faces a separate charge of harassment without violence against Mr Perry, which is being dealt with at magistrates' court.
Background of the Dispute
The court previously heard that Beaney and Mr Perry share a driveway, and the alleged poisoning follows arguments over parking. Beaney is also accused of displaying signs on or near obstacles across the shared driveway, accusing Mr Perry of trespassing and wrongdoing. Additionally, she is alleged to have abused, threatened, or intimidated delivery drivers and other service providers attending his address, and to have made an obscene gesture towards him and his family, including a child, while they were walking together.
The harassment charge covers incidents between August 6 and November 11, 2025. Beaney denies all allegations and will face trial next year for the poisoning charge.
