Two brothels in Oldham have been shut down by police following complaints from neighbours about men loitering outside. The properties, on Balfour Street and Miriam Street, were closed after reports of suspicious activity and significant distress caused to residents.
Greater Manchester Police received reports from residents and councillors about men arriving throughout the day and night, staying for short periods, and then leaving. This behaviour was causing considerable distress and affecting the quality of life for those living nearby.
Police Raids and Arrests
On July 27, officers attended the Balfour Street property over a concern for welfare. They found a brothel operating and detained a man who attempted to flee through the rear of the property. Two people were arrested on suspicion of controlling prostitution for gain.
The following day, a warrant was executed at the Miriam Street address following community reports. Two women were arrested and bailed while the investigation continues.
Closure Orders Granted
In both cases, a 48-hour closure notice was authorised, followed by a three-month closure order granted by Tameside Magistrates' Court on July 29. It is now a criminal offence to enter or remain in either property during this period.
Neighbourhood Inspector for Oldham South and West, Amie Whitehead, said: "These two premises had a significant impact on people living nearby, with men attending the addresses throughout the day and night and loitering outside neighbouring homes while waiting to enter."
"Residents told us this behaviour was causing considerable distress within the community and affecting their quality of life," she added. The orders will prevent further criminality and protect the local community.
