Notorious Bodybuilder 'The Purple Aki' Dies After Police Contact

The North West of England is grappling with the complex legacy of Akinwale Arobieke, a figure whose nickname 'The Purple Aki' became synonymous with one of the region's most bizarre and long-running criminal sagas. His death following police contact has now cast a fresh spotlight on his notorious past.

Merseyside Police confirmed the 61-year-old was detained on Sunday, December 17th, under the terms of a controversial court order specifically designed to restrict his behaviour. Shortly after his encounter with officers, Arobieke fell ill. Despite being rushed to a hospital, he was pronounced dead.

Investigation Launched into Police Contact

In accordance with standard procedure, the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The watchdog will now scrutinise the exact circumstances of Arobieke's detention and the events that led to his sudden deterioration in health.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police expressed the force's condolences, stating, "His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time." The case will now undergo a thorough independent examination to determine if proper procedures were followed.

The Notorious Legend of 'The Purple Aki'

Arobieke's infamy stemmed from his unusual and intimidating approach to young men, particularly muscular athletes and bodybuilders. His modus operandi involved approaching them in gyms or on the street, often asking to feel their muscles or challenging them to squat exercises.

This behaviour led to a prolific criminal record, with numerous convictions for offences including harassment and common assault. His notoriety was so great that he became the subject of urban myths and was even name-dropped in a song by the Liverpool band The Streets.

A Life of Legal Restrictions

In a highly unusual legal move, a court order was imposed on Arobieke, which forbade him from several specific actions. The order prohibited him from:

  • Touching any male's muscles without their consent.
  • Asking any male to perform squat exercises.
  • Even looking at any male's muscles in public with the intent to ask about them.

This order was the legal basis for his final detention by police. The death of Akinwale Arobieke closes a chapter on a truly singular figure in British criminal history, leaving behind a story that blurred the lines between real-life crime and bizarre folklore.
