Nobel Peace laureate and prominent Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi has been transferred to a hospital in Tehran following a collapse in prison, according to her foundation. The transfer occurred more than a week after she lost consciousness while incarcerated, with her family and supporters pleading for urgent medical attention.
Details of the Transfer
The foundation confirmed that Mohammadi was moved from Zanjan prison to a medical facility in the capital after being granted a suspension of her prison sentence on bail. She had been detained since December and experienced two episodes of unconsciousness before being taken to a local hospital on May 1.
Ongoing Health Concerns
In a statement shared with the Associated Press, the foundation emphasised that the suspended sentence is insufficient and that Mohammadi requires permanent, specialised care. The statement added, "We must ensure she never returns to prison to face the 18 years remaining on her sentence. Now is the time to demand her unconditional freedom and the dismissal of all charges."
Mohammadi, a vocal human rights advocate, has been a target of the Iranian authorities for years. Her health has deteriorated significantly during her incarceration, raising international concern.
International Reaction
Human rights organisations and global leaders have called for her immediate release, citing her deteriorating condition and the political nature of her imprisonment. The Nobel laureate's case continues to draw attention to the broader crackdown on dissent in Iran.
