A devastating murder-suicide has shaken the community of Newry, Northern Ireland, after a man allegedly killed his ex-partner before taking his own life.
Police were called to a property in the Carnagh Park area of Newry on Monday afternoon following reports of concern for a woman's welfare. Upon arrival, officers discovered the bodies of a man and woman inside the home.
Victims Identified
The deceased have been named locally as Rebecca Black, a 30-year-old mother, and her former partner Anthony John Martin, 32. Preliminary investigations suggest Martin stabbed Ms Black before turning the weapon on himself.
Community in Shock
Neighbours expressed their horror at the tragic events. One resident described the couple as "quiet people who kept to themselves," while another spoke of their disbelief at the violence that had occurred in their normally peaceful neighbourhood.
Detective Inspector John Wilson from the PSNI's Major Investigation Team confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. "This appears to be a tragic case of domestic homicide followed by suicide," he stated.
Domestic Violence Concerns
The tragedy has reignited concerns about domestic violence in Northern Ireland. Support services have reported increased calls following the incident, with many women expressing fears for their own safety in abusive relationships.
Local MP Mickey Brady described the incident as "heartbreaking" and called for greater resources to combat domestic violence. "No one should have to live in fear in their own home," he said.
Police have urged anyone affected by domestic abuse to come forward, stressing that help is available through various support organisations.
