Designer Exchange, a designer clothing store on Grainger Street in Newcastle city centre, has closed temporarily after a car crashed through its glass front and left the scene. The vehicle, believed to be a Volkswagen Sharan, struck the shop near Grey's Monument in the early hours of Monday.
Photographs from the scene show shattered glass inside and outside the premises, with a large pile on the ground outside. Damage also appears to have been caused to furniture and stock inside the retail unit.
Police response and appeal
Northumbria Police attended after the collision, which took place at around 4.40am on Monday, and caused damage to the building. No injuries have been reported, and officers are making enquiries to identify those involved, as the vehicle left the area before they arrived.
The force has urged anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed anything, or has dashcam footage, to get in touch. Witnesses can contact Northumbria Police by sending a direct message, using the live chat and report forms on its website, or by calling 101, quoting reference NP-20261026-0084.
