New Medical Reports Submitted in Donaldson Case, Court Hears
The trial of former DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and his wife, Lady Eleanor Donaldson, has encountered another procedural development with the submission of two new medical reports to the court. Judge Paul Ramsey confirmed the receipt of these documents during a brief update hearing at Newry Crown Court on Friday.
Background of the Case
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, 63, has pleaded not guilty to 18 alleged historical sexual offences, including one count of rape, indecent assault, and gross indecency. The charges span a period from 1985 to 2008 and involve two alleged victims. His wife, Eleanor Donaldson, 59, of Dublinhill Road, Dromore, faces charges of aiding and abetting, which she also denies.
The trial has been delayed twice previously due to medical issues concerning Lady Donaldson. A new trial date has been set for May 26, but neither of the Donaldsons attended the recent hearing.
Court Proceedings and Medical Reports
During the hearing, Judge Ramsey noted that the court had received two further medical reports on Eleanor Donaldson. Prosecuting barrister Rosemary Walsh KC indicated she had received the reports on Friday morning. The judge stated that the prosecution would need time to review these documents.
An update on the progress ahead of the trial was provided, with Judge Ramsey scheduling a review of the matter for May 5. He remarked, "That will give us a clear three weeks before the trial." This timeline allows for thorough preparation and assessment of the new medical information.
Political Context and Arrest
Jeffrey Donaldson, the long-standing MP for Lagan Valley, was arrested and charged at the end of March 2024. Following the emergence of the allegations, he resigned as DUP leader and was suspended from the party. Notably, just weeks before his arrest, he had led the DUP back into Stormont after a two-year boycott of the powersharing institutions, marking a significant political moment.
The case continues to draw attention due to its high-profile nature and the serious charges involved. The submission of new medical reports adds another layer to the legal proceedings, potentially impacting the trial's schedule and outcomes.
