Two carers, Nancy Pexton, 54, and Jennifer Abbott, 50, have been jailed for a combined total of over 12 years for the systematic abuse of an elderly woman in her own home. The offences took place between 2019 and 2021, when the victim, who suffered from dementia, was subjected to physical assaults, verbal abuse, and neglect.
Details of the Abuse
The court heard that Pexton and Abbott, who were employed as private carers, repeatedly slapped, kicked, and punched the 78-year-old victim. They also taunted her, withheld food and medication, and left her in soiled clothing. On one occasion, they forced her to sleep on a cold floor without bedding. The abuse was uncovered when a concerned relative installed a hidden camera in the victim's bedroom.
Sentencing
At Liverpool Crown Court, Pexton was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison, while Abbott received a five-year term. Judge Andrew Menary described their actions as a "campaign of cruelty" and said they had betrayed the trust placed in them. Both women were found guilty of charges including actual bodily harm and ill-treatment of a person lacking capacity.
Impact on the Victim
The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has since been moved to a care home. Her family said in a statement that she had been "traumatised" by the abuse and that her physical and mental health had deteriorated significantly. They added that they hoped the sentences would serve as a deterrent to others.
Police Reaction
Detective Constable Sarah Jones of Merseyside Police said: "This was a shocking case of abuse by two women who were supposed to be providing care. They subjected a vulnerable elderly woman to appalling treatment over a prolonged period. We welcome the sentences and hope they bring some closure to the victim and her family."
