Police Renew Appeal 30 Years After Naked Mutilated Body Found in Reservoir

Detectives have renewed their appeal for information on the 30th anniversary of the murder of Laurence Winstanley, whose mutilated and partly burned body was found in a reservoir in West Yorkshire.

The 23-year-old mechanic disappeared on October 2, 1988, after a night out at his local pub, The Windsor, in Oldham. His body was discovered nearly a year later, on September 26, 1989, in Baitings Dam near Littleborough, wrapped in a curtain and weighed down with a pick-axe head.

Police believe the killing was a targeted gangland 'execution' and that the murderer did not act alone. Despite a £25,000 reward offered by his mother and a £10,000 police reward, no one has ever been convicted.

Detective Superintendent Jim Dunkerley of West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry team said: 'The amount of time that has passed in no way diminishes our desire to achieve justice for the victim and his family.'

He urged anyone with information to come forward, noting that changes in relationships and allegiances over time might encourage people to share what they know.

Anyone with information should call the Cold Case Review Team on 101 quoting crime reference number 13090263170, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
