Greater Manchester Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a woman in her 40s on a quiet street in Bolton.
Officers were called to reports of an assault in Breightmet at around 3:15am on Tuesday, August 4. A woman, who has not yet been named, died at a home on Yewdale Avenue despite the efforts of emergency services.
A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.
Residents woken by sirens
Residents in the area said they were woken at around 4am by the sound of sirens and flashing blue lights. The road was blocked off, with ambulance, police, and crime scene investigators at the scene.
In a statement issued at around 10:30am, a GMP spokesperson said: "Officers responded to reports of an assault on Yewdale Avenue, Bolton at around 3:15am this morning (August 4, 2026). Upon attendance, they located a woman, aged in her 40s, unresponsive with significant injuries. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene."
Cordon in place
The spokesperson added: "One man, aged 36, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning. A scene will remain in place, and we will have an increased police presence in the area as enquiries continue."
A police cordon remained in place late into the morning, with one house entirely blocked off with police tape. Detectives, police, and forensics units were seen entering houses surrounding the cordoned property.
Some residents described their shock, saying the neighbourhood is usually quiet and peaceful, while others said incidents like this seem to be happening more regularly.
