A Missouri man has been charged with first-degree murder following a fatal shooting in a grocery store parking lot on Memorial Day. Allen Prince, 27, of Pleasant Hill, faces multiple charges, including three counts of armed criminal action and two counts of first-degree assault, in connection with the incident that left one woman dead and a teenage employee wounded.
The shooting occurred on Monday afternoon in the parking lot of a Price Chopper grocery store in Pleasant Hill, a small town about 40 miles southeast of Kansas City. Amy Coon, 45, of Strasburg, Missouri, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 16-year-old Price Chopper employee was also shot and is in stable condition at a local hospital. The teen was working his first job, according to family members.
Prince turned the gun on himself after the shooting and is currently in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit. Police have been unable to interview him due to his sedated state. Authorities have not established a motive for the shooting, which appears to have been random. They found no initial connection between Prince and the victims.
Two armed citizens intervened shortly after the gunfire began. Pleasant Hill Police Chief Tommy Wright stated that their actions may have prevented further bloodshed. 'We are grateful for their bravery,' Wright said in a press conference. 'This could have been much worse.'
The incident marks the first homicide in Pleasant Hill in nearly two decades. The community is in shock, as the town is known for being safe and quiet. 'This is a tragedy for our community,' said Mayor Sarah Jenkins. 'Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.'
Prince is being held without bond. A court date has not yet been set. The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
