An Amish woman and her six children have died after a house explosion in rural Pennsylvania, authorities have confirmed. The blast occurred on Sunday morning in Lamar Township, Clinton County, near Mill Hall, and the subsequent fire quickly engulfed the home.
Emergency services responded to reports of an explosion and fire, but the flames were too intense for rescuers to enter. All seven occupants were trapped inside and pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were identified as Sarah Stoltzfus, 34, her four sons aged 11, 10, 5 and 3, and two daughters aged 8 and 6.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the cause of the explosion. Initial reports suggest a propane leak inside the home may have been responsible, although external propane tanks were not involved in the blast and did not contribute to the fire.
Neighbour Christina Duck told WNEP-TV she was having breakfast when she heard a loud boom. 'I could feel it,' she said. 'I looked out the window and saw flames. Within a minute, the whole house was completely engulfed.' Duck added that the family had moved in only a few months ago, and she often saw the children playing outside.
Members of the local Amish community arrived at the scene to assist with cleanup and pay their respects. The family were members of the Old Order Amish Church, a community known for its traditional lifestyle, reliance on horse-drawn carriages, and use of the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect.
