Human remains discovered last week in New Mexico's Carson National Forest have been positively identified as those of Melissa Casias, a Los Alamos National Laboratory employee who had been missing since June of the previous year. The 44-year-old woman was last seen walking along State Road 518 after dropping her husband off at work on June 26, 2025.
Discovery and Investigation
A hiker stumbled upon the remains in the remote McGaffrey Ridge area, prompting an investigation by local authorities. Alongside the skeletal remains, a handgun was recovered. The New Mexico Medical Investigator's Office is now tasked with determining the exact cause and manner of death, though officials have not ruled out foul play. Earlier in the investigation, authorities had considered the possibility that Casias, who according to her husband was under immense stress, may have disappeared voluntarily.
Community Reaction
The news has sent shockwaves through the small community of Taos and the wider scientific community at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where Casias was known as a dedicated employee. Her family has requested privacy as they grieve. The case, which had remained open for nearly a year, now takes a tragic turn as investigators work to piece together the final moments of her life.
