A mysterious vigilante dubbed the 'Mexican Batman' has emerged in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, duct-taping alleged bike thieves to street poles after a spike in local crime. At least five cases have been reported, according to State Security Secretary Juan Pablo Hernández.
The alleged thieves were found with the word 'ratero' (thief) written on their heads, and often had moustaches and cat whiskers drawn on their cheeks. Stolen motorbikes were typically left nearby. One man was left bloodied and bruised after his encounter with the vigilante.
Police Investigation and Public Reaction
Local police are treating the duct-taped men as victims and have launched an investigation to find the suspect. All five men were cut down and treated for their injuries. Police have identified two vehicles believed to be connected to the attacks, but no suspects have been named.
Online users have shared images of the duct-taped men, calling the vigilante the 'Batman of Lagos de Moreno' or 'Mexican Batman'. Pink signs were left above the alleged thieves' heads detailing the accusations.
Context of Vigilantism in Mexico
This is not the first instance of vigilante justice in the region. In nearby Michoacán, a group of women carrying assault rifles have formed a self-defense group to protect themselves from the Jalisco New Generation cartel. They have built a homemade tank and set up roadblocks to stop gunmen, who are blamed for a rise in homicides locally.
