A massive blaze near Vallentin Road in Walthamstow has led to resident evacuations, traffic chaos, and the suspension of the Weaver London Overground line. Around 125 firefighters are battling the fire, which has engulfed a railway embankment, a house, gardens, and sheds.
Fire Details and Response
London Fire Brigade reported that 20 fire engines and approximately 125 firefighters were called to the scene near Vallentin Road and Shernhall Street. The fire, which started around 18:27, has generated a significant amount of smoke. Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area.
A 32-metre turntable ladder has been deployed as a water tower to fight the fire from above, and the Brigade's drone team is providing situational awareness to the Incident Commander. The first of over 100 calls was received at 18:27, with crews mobilised from Tottenham, Bethnal Green, Walthamstow, Chingford, and surrounding fire stations.
Impact on Transport and Community
The Weaver Overground line has been partially closed, and road closures are in place on Wood Street, Shernhall Street, and surrounding roads. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Two rest centres have been set up locally in partnership with Waltham Forest Council for affected residents.
