A hotel in Manchester's Gay Village has been fully evacuated following a reported chemical incident. Emergency services responded to reports of a strong chemical smell on Canal Street, prompting a search of a hotel room.
Police confirmed that no injuries have been reported. A man believed to be the occupant of the room was detained at the scene and remains in custody.
A large emergency response was seen, including police, ambulance, and fire crews. Some nearby shops were also evacuated as investigations took place.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson stated: "We are currently searching a hotel room at a premises on Canal Street, Manchester. This follows a report of a smell - currently believed to be chemicals - causing suspicion."
"As a precautionary measure, the hotel has been evacuated while specialist resources examine the material and conduct further enquiries. No-one has been injured and we are working to establish the full circumstances."
A cordon remains on Canal Street, though the barrier on Sackville Street has been removed. Investigators have been seen around nearby On Bar.
