Man sought after biting passenger holding baby on train

British Transport Police have launched an investigation after a man allegedly bit and assaulted a passenger who was holding a baby on a train in south east London. The man fled the scene at Woolwich Arsenal station before officers arrived.

Incident on board a train

The family were seated on the train between Maze Hill and Woolwich Arsenal at around 5.30pm on Saturday, September 5 when they were confronted by a man. According to British Transport Police, the man "became aggressive before assaulting and biting a man who was holding a baby in his arms."

Other members of the family tried to intervene during the incident and were also assaulted by the man. After leaving the train at Woolwich Arsenal station, the man fled the scene.

CCTV image released

The force has issued a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to in relation to the incident. He is seen wearing a cream and black t-shirt under a black coat. No further description, including height or build, has been given.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "Anyone who recognises the man is asked to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 581 of 5 September."

"Information can also be given to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Possible penalties

In the UK, if convicted of common assault or battery, which involves force or threats with minor or no injury, the maximum sentence is six months in custody. If convicted of Actual Bodily Harm (ABH - Section 47), which includes acts causing more transient injury such as bruising, minor cuts, or psychological harm, the maximum sentence is five years in custody.
