A man has been sentenced to over a decade in prison for fatally punching a father outside a Wetherspoons pub in Ebbw Vale, Gwent, after feeling disrespected.
Details of the Incident
Kyle O’Callaghan, 30, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Marcus Carpenter, 37, who died in hospital on February 24, four days after the assault outside the Picture House pub.
Newport Crown Court heard that on the evening of February 20, both men were at the pub with separate groups. Around midnight, O’Callaghan approached Carpenter and his friends, asking “who are you then?” and demanding he follow him outside.
In an alleyway, O’Callaghan struck Carpenter twice “unprovoked” before fleeing. Carpenter collapsed and succumbed to severe head injuries on February 24.
Judge's Remarks
Judge Daniel Williams stated: “You headed to the table where Marcus Carpenter and his friends were… You had heard that Marcus Carpenter had been saying things about you to other people. You are very quick to think that you’ve been wronged by others, whatever the truth of the situation.”
The judge noted there was “no bad feeling” between the men, but O’Callaghan was “spoiling for a fight” and “felt disrespected.” CCTV showed Carpenter with his arms at his side when O’Callaghan delivered the “fatal, sickening blow.”
After Carpenter collapsed, O’Callaghan attempted to drag his body and slapped him before fleeing. He later claimed self-defense, which the judge dismissed as “nothing of the sort.”
Sentence and Family Tribute
O’Callaghan was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison, with an extended license period of four years. Judge Williams said: “Your selfishness seems limitless… Your actions have caused unimaginable grief, loss and sadness.”
In a tribute, Carpenter’s family described him as a “beloved son, partner and dad” with “the kindest of hearts,” adding: “His passing has left a massive hole in the lives of everyone close to him.”
