A man in his 20s is fighting for his life in hospital after being assaulted by a number of people in Wallsend on Friday. Northumbria Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which is said to have happened on the grassed area near Addington Drive in Hadrian Park.
The incident was reported at around 1pm. Officers from Northumbria Police, the North East Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance Service helicopter all attended the scene.
Police confirmed the victim, a man in his 20s, was found in a critical condition and taken to hospital for further treatment. Forensic officers were seen at the scene, and a large cordon was put in place.
Police statement on the assault
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Just after 1pm today (Friday), we received a report of a disturbance in the Wallsend area of North Tyneside. It was reported that a man had been assaulted by a number of people on the grassed area near Addington Drive.
“They are then reported to have made off from the scene. Emergency services attended and located a man – aged in his 20s – in a critical condition.
“He was treated at the scene, then taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains. There is an increased police presence in the area, and a cordon is in place near Addington Drive while enquiries are ongoing.

Air ambulance response
A Great North Air Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed the charitably-run service had attended. They said: "Our paramedic and doctor team were activated at 13:08pm to an incident near Wallsend. They flew to the scene and arrived within 22 minutes, working alongside the North East Ambulance Service, they stabilised the patient before accompanying them to hospital."
A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to an unwell person near to Blackhill Avenue, Wallsend shortly before 1pm on 9 October. We dispatched two double crewed ambulances, a clinical team leader and we were supported by Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by road with a doctor on board."
The victim remains in hospital, and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
