A 38-year-old man has tragically died following a shark attack at Rottnest Island, a popular holiday destination off the coast of Western Australia. The incident occurred near Perth at approximately 10:00 AM on Saturday, according to a spokesperson for St John WA Ambulance Service.

The man was attacked while in the water at Horseshoe Reef, around 19 kilometres from the mainland port of Fremantle. Emergency services were alerted to a possible shark attack at 9:55 AM on Saturday, 16 May 2026. The victim was brought to shore by boat at Geordie Bay on the northern side of the island, where paramedics provided medical treatment. Despite their efforts, the man could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Surf Life Saving WA reported that a five-metre-long white shark was spotted approximately 80 metres offshore around the time of the attack.
