Emergency Response to the Blaze
More than 40 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, with nine fire appliances and specialist resources mobilised at the height of the incident. Thick black smoke was seen billowing from a window on the twelfth floor of the high-rise as crews battled the intense blaze.
Official Statements on the Tragedy
Area Commander Stephen Nesbit, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s Local Senior Officer for Lanarkshire, confirmed the details. ‘We were alerted at 10.08pm on Thursday, 5 March to reports of a fire within a flat on the 12th floor of a multi-storey block near Shields Drive in Motherwell,’ he said.
‘Tragically, one male died at the scene after falling from the flat where the fire had taken hold. Our thoughts are very much with his family, friends and the wider community at this extremely difficult time.’
Witness Account from the Scene
Michael Lamarra, a 40-year-old resident living opposite the tower block, described the chaotic scene. ‘I was just sitting watching TV and heard a lot of commotion, raised voices and yelling, but it can be wild round here at night,’ he recounted.
‘It was only when my brother texted me alerting me that the block was on fire, that I drew back the curtains and saw the smoke and emergency services. It’s just tragic to hear that a man has passed away.’
Police Investigation Underway
A Police Scotland spokesman provided further details, noting that the report of the fire was received around 10.20pm on Thursday, March 5. ‘Emergency services attended and a man was seen having fallen from the window of a property. He was pronounced dead at the scene,’ the spokesman stated.
‘The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and no-one else was injured. Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.’
Aftermath and Ongoing Presence
The blaze was successfully extinguished, but one fire engine remained at the scene until 6.30am on Friday morning as investigations continued. The man, who has not yet been named, fell from a window during the fire, leading to his death being pronounced at the location.
This devastating event has shaken the local community in Motherwell, with authorities working diligently to understand the causes and ensure such a tragedy does not recur.
