A man has died after being struck by three vehicles on the M56 motorway near Runcorn in the early hours of Monday morning.
Emergency services were called to the scene between junction 12 at Runcorn and junction 14 at Hapsford at around 12.50am following reports that a pedestrian had been hit on the carriageway.
Cheshire Police officers and paramedics found that the man had been struck by a black Dacia Duster, a red Kia Niro and a black Ford Focus. Despite efforts from emergency teams, the man, thought to be a 38-year-old from Golborne, was declared dead at the scene.
Road closed for hours
The M56 eastbound was closed for a considerable period and reopened at around 9.15am. Forensic investigations were reportedly carried out by the collisions team at Cheshire Police before the carriageway was reopened.
The man's next of kin have been notified and are being supported by specialist officers.
Police appeal for witnesses
Detective Sergeant Russ Sime, from the serious collision investigation unit, said: "This was a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased."
He added: "Enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding this collision are ongoing and as part of the investigation we are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or believes they may have seen the pedestrian on the motorway prior to the collision, to get in touch."
"The same goes for anyone with any dashcam footage which may aid our investigation."
