A quiet South London street became the scene of a terrifying ordeal on Wednesday afternoon when a 57-year-old man was savagely attacked by a dangerous dog, prompting an armed police response and leaving the local community in shock.
The violent incident unfolded around 1:30 PM on Norwood Road in Tulse Hill, sending emergency services scrambling to the residential area. Witnesses reported scenes of chaos as the aggressive animal turned on the middle-aged victim in a brutal mauling.
Armed officers from the Metropolitan Police were dispatched to deal with the out-of-control dog. Following established protocols for dealing with dangerously out-of-control animals, police made the difficult decision to euthanise the dog at the scene to protect public safety.
Critical Condition After Vicious Assault
The victim, whose identity has not been released, suffered severe injuries in the attack. London Ambulance Service paramedics provided emergency treatment at the scene before rushing him to a major trauma centre.
"He was taken to a major trauma centre as a priority - his condition is described as critical," confirmed a police spokesperson. Medical staff remain in a battle to save the man's life as he receives specialist care for his extensive injuries.
Community Left Reeling from Afternoon Terror
Local residents expressed their horror at witnessing such violence in their neighbourhood. "It was absolutely terrifying to see this happening right outside our homes," said one shaken resident who asked not to be named.
Another witness described the police response as "swift and professional" given the dangerous circumstances, though the sound of gunfire left many in the area distressed.
Investigation Launched into Dangerous Dog
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a crime scene remains in place while forensic experts conduct their investigation. Officers are working to establish the breed of the dog and circumstances that led to the attack.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses and any available CCTV or mobile phone footage that might help piece together the events leading up to the violent incident.
"Enquiries into the full circumstances continue," stated police officials, who have notified the local council about the incident as part of standard procedure for dangerous dog cases.
