A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a punching bag machine was allegedly pushed onto him during an altercation. Emergency services were called to a row of shops on Berkley Street in Toxteth shortly before 7pm on Thursday, October 29, following reports of a disturbance.
Officers arriving at the scene found that a punching bag machine had toppled and fallen onto a man. The man, who is in his 50s, sustained a serious head injury and was taken to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.
Incident initially reported as stabbing
The Liverpool Echo initially reported the incident as a stabbing; however, Merseyside Police has since confirmed the precise details of what took place.
A white tent remains erected at the scene in the pedestrianised area off Upper Parliament Street. The focal point of the police cordon appears to be outside Bon Café, where the shutter remains half closed. Two sheets of tarpaulin are also visible on the ground near the tent in the aftermath of the incident.
Investigation and appeal for witnesses
An investigation is now underway, with witness and CCTV enquiries being carried out across the surrounding area. Detective Inspector Lee Egerton said: "Enquiries into this incident are ongoing and we are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Berkley Street at around 7pm last night who saw anything or can assist our enquiries in any way to get in touch as a matter of urgency."
