Man critical after car crash in Sunderland; driver arrested

The crash happened at around 5am on Chester Road, near the junction with Kayll Road, when a blue Volkswagen T-Roc collided with the front of a property. A section of Chester Road was closed for several hours while the vehicle was recovered and investigations were carried out. The road has since fully reopened.

The passenger of the car, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. His condition has today been described as critical. Another man, also in his 20s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was released on bail after questioning.

Emergency response

The North East Ambulance Service dispatched three ambulance crews, a doctor in a rapid response car, a hazardous area response team (HART) crew and a specialist paramedic. Firefighters also attended the scene.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call just after 5am for reports of a car in collision with a house near the junction between Kayll Road and Chester Road in Sunderland. We dispatched three ambulance crews, a doctor in a rapid response car, a hazardous area response team (HART) crew and a specialist paramedic. One unconscious patient was taken to the RVI in Newcastle after treatment from the doctor and paramedics for chest and pelvic injuries. Two other patients refused assessment from our crews and were taken to hospital by the police."

Appeal for information

Officers from Northumbria Police's Roads Policing Unit are appealing for anyone who saw the blue Volkswagen T-Roc being driven in Sunderland before the collision to come forward. Police are also looking for any CCTV or dashcam footage.
