A man has been arrested over an alleged attempted abduction after a young girl was approached in the street in Barrow.
Incident details
Police were called to reports that a girl under 10 had been approached by a man in Rawlinson Street, Barrow, at around 7.45pm on Wednesday.
A man was arrested by Cumbria Police over the incident. The force said he has now been released on bail while enquiries continue.
Police response
It is understood that no physical contact was made with the child, but the force reiterated that it takes such reports seriously.
Door to door enquiries have been carried out and patrols have increased in the area.
Appeal for information
Police warned locals to be vigilant, but at the same time they have urged against unhelpful online speculation and asked for "time to carry out their work and establish the factual circumstances".
An appeal has been made for anyone with information about the case to get in touch, including people who may have CCTV or doorbell footage.
The force said: "A man arrested following an incident in Rawlinson Street in Barrow yesterday evening (12 Aug) has been released on bail whilst police continue with their enquiries.
"As investigations continue, officers are urging anyone with information which may assist to come forward, whilst continuing to encourage people to refrain from online speculation whilst police officers continue their work to establish the circumstances of what has occurred."
