A man in his 70s and a woman in her 60s have died following a head-on collision with a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) on Hall Lane in Appley Bridge, near Wrightington Hospital, Lancashire. The incident occurred at approximately 8am on Thursday, 9 July 2026.
Details of the Collision
According to Lancashire Police, a red Volkswagen Golf was travelling east when it appears to have failed to negotiate a bend, crossed the carriageway, and collided head-on with an oncoming HGV. The driver of the Golf, a man in his 70s, and the passenger, a woman in her 60s, sustained serious injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the HGV was left shocked but uninjured and is being treated as a witness to the incident. Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam, CCTV, or Ring doorbell footage to come forward.
Police Appeal
Sergeant Martin Wilcock of Lancashire Police said: 'Very sadly this collision has resulted in two people losing their lives and my thoughts are with their loved ones. I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened and who has not yet spoken with police, or anyone with footage such as dashcam, CCTV or Ring doorbell to get in touch.'
He added: 'I would also like to speak to anyone who saw the VW Golf driving in the moments before the collision.'
