Greater Manchester Police have launched a major investigation after a 20-year-old man was stabbed in Manchester's Northern Quarter in the early hours of Sunday. The victim, who has not been named, was taken to hospital from Oldham Street with injuries described as 'consistent with a stab wound'. Police have stated that the injuries are 'not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing'.
Police Cordon and Emergency Response
A large police cordon was established at the junction of Oldham Road and Thomas Street following the incident. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 2:18 a.m. on Sunday, 28 June 2026. The victim was promptly transported to hospital for treatment.
Chief Inspector Robert MacGregor confirmed that police patrols in the area are being stepped up. He said: 'This incident will understandably cause concern for the community and whilst the injuries suffered by the victim are neither life-threatening, nor life-changing, Greater Manchester Police are committed to diligently investigating all knife crime and bringing offenders to justice.'
Appeal for Witnesses
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward. No arrests have been made thus far, and detectives are continuing their enquiries. In a statement, GMP said: 'At around 2.18am this morning, Sunday, we were called to reports of a stabbing on Oldham Street, Manchester. Emergency services attended and a 20 year-old man was taken to hospital with injuries consistent with a stab wound. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. No arrests have been made, and detectives continue to work at pace as they carry out diligent enquiries. Police are asking the public to please come forward with information to assist with enquires.'
The incident is believed to be isolated, with no ongoing risk to the wider public. Chief Inspector MacGregor added: 'The response of emergency services overnight was quick and detectives will now continue to carry out enquiries. This is believed to be an isolated incident with no risk to the wider public. Neighbourhood officers will be in the area today to speak with local residents and businesses to provide reassurance.'
