The M67 eastbound is shut after suspected human remains were found close to a bridge between junctions three and four, near Hyde and Hattersley. Greater Manchester Police were called to the motorway just after 11pm on Monday (August 3) after road workers made the discovery.
Police Investigation Underway
Detectives believe they have identified suspected human remains at the scene, with a large police presence and multiple vehicles in the area this afternoon. Forensics officers in white suits and masks have been pictured working close to the bridge on the eastbound carriageway.
A force spokesperson said: "Officers were called shortly after 11pm on Monday, August 3 2026, by road workers who made the discover close to a bridge between junctions three and four.
"We are working with specialist teams to understand the circumstances behind this incident. The road will be closed between junctions three and four while detectives carry out their investigation.
"Please continue to avoid the area and we will provide updates when we have them."
Closure Expected to Remain
National Highways confirmed just before 2pm that the closure will remain in place to 'allow police to conduct their investigation'. The eastbound carriageway is expected to be shut for most of the day due to the nature of the incident.
