The M67 has reopened following the discovery of suspected human remains near the motorway. Police were called to the scene after road workers found the remains close to a bridge between junctions three and four, between Hyde and Hattersley, shortly after 11pm on Monday (August 3).
Investigation and closure
Forensic officers scoured the scene throughout Tuesday as detectives worked to establish the circumstances. The motorway was closed between junctions three and four while investigations were carried out.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "We are working with specialist teams to understand the circumstances behind this incident." People were urged to avoid the area.
Roadworks and reopening
At around 8.30pm on Tuesday evening, police concluded their investigations, according to National Highways. However, the same stretch remained closed overnight for planned roadworks as part of the A57 link roads scheme.
The motorway reopened at 6am this morning (Wednesday, August 5). In a statement, GMP confirmed: "Detectives believe they have identified human remains found close to the M67 in #Tameside."
