M6 shut for hours after serious crash and vehicle fire

The M6 in Greater Manchester remains closed in both directions after a serious crash and vehicle fire, with police investigations expected to continue for several more hours.

Road closed overnight between junctions

The motorway was shut late on Sunday night between J23 (Newton Le Willows) and J24 (Ashton In Makerfield). The road closed at around 10.20pm on Sunday evening and remained shut as of 6am on Monday morning, October 19.

All emergency services attended the incident, and a police investigation is now underway. A diversion route is in place.

Investigation and recovery underway

A spokesperson for National Highways said: "A police collision investigation is currently underway and is expected to continue for several further hours. Following completion of the investigation, recovery agents will remove the vehicles involved."

The carriageway road surface will then be assessed for any damage. There is currently no estimated time of when the road will re-open.

Long queues are building on the motorway as the closure continues into the morning rush hour. This is a live news story, and further updates will follow.
