The M5 motorway near Bristol Airport is experiencing severe disruption tonight following a police incident that has led to the closure of the carriageway in both directions near Avonmouth.

Delays of Over an Hour

Drivers are facing delays of more than 65 minutes northbound and 20 minutes southbound. National Highways has urged motorists to seek alternative routes as the situation develops.

Closure Details

The M5 is currently shut southbound between junction 18 (M49) and junction 19 (Gordano Services), and northbound from junction 21 to junction 18. Traffic is being turned around in the southbound direction.

National Highways stated: "The M5 in Somerset is closed southbound between J18 (M49) and J19 (Gordano Services) due to an Avon & Somerset Police led incident. Northbound the carriageway is closed from J21 to J18."

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys or avoid the area altogether until further notice.
