A 17-year-old boy from London has died after disappearing while snorkelling on a school camping trip to Malawi. Eugene Enoch Kwon, from Hampton, was swimming with classmates in Lake Malawi on Tuesday when he vanished.

Search and Recovery

A search operation was launched in Monkey Bay, and divers located him underwater. He was rushed to hospital but could not be revived. Police confirmed his cause of death as suffocation due to drowning.

Supt Patrick Mussa of the Malawi Police Service's Eastern Region Police Headquarters said the boy's disappearance prompted an 'immediate search operation'. He added: 'After an extensive search, divers located him underwater.'

School's Response

A spokesperson for Hampton School, a private boys' school in Richmond upon Thames, confirmed that one of its students had died on the school camping trip. The spokesperson said: 'Our thoughts, love and deepest sympathies are with the pupil's family and loved ones at this unimaginably difficult time. At present, our focus is supporting the pupil's family and everyone affected within our school community.'

Ongoing Investigation

Police in the Eastern Region have expressed condolences to the bereaved family, and investigations into the incident are continuing.
