A railway worker is recovering from life-threatening injuries after being brutally stabbed multiple times while on duty aboard a London North Eastern Railway (LNER) service near Huntingdon.
The shocking attack occurred on Thursday afternoon as the train travelled between Huntingdon and Peterborough, sending shockwaves through the rail community and prompting a major police investigation.
Violent Onslaught on Moving Train
According to British Transport Police, the victim, identified as Samir Zitouni, was subjected to a vicious assault while performing his duties on the London-bound service. The 26-year-old suspect, also from Huntingdon, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.
Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of the stabbing, with paramedics treating the seriously injured worker before transporting him to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
Community and Colleagues Express Outrage
The violent incident has left the local community and railway staff deeply shaken. A police cordon remained in place at Huntingdon railway station throughout Thursday evening as forensic officers conducted their investigation.
"This was a horrific and senseless attack on a member of railway staff simply doing their job," a British Transport Police spokesperson stated. "We're working closely with LNER to support the victim and his colleagues during this traumatic time."
Rail Union Demands Enhanced Safety Measures
Rail union representatives have expressed grave concerns about worker safety following the attack. The incident has reignited debates about security measures on Britain's railways and protection for frontline staff.
LNER confirmed they're providing full support to the injured employee and his family while cooperating fully with the police investigation. The railway operator has also offered counselling services to other staff members affected by the traumatic event.
The suspect remains in police custody as detectives continue to investigate the motive behind the brutal daytime attack on Britain's rail network.
