Chaos erupted in the heart of London's world-famous West End on Thursday evening, as a man armed with a knife sent crowds of tourists and theatre-goers fleeing in panic. The incident prompted a massive and swift response from the Metropolitan Police, who swarmed Leicester Square just after 6:30 PM.
Eyewitnesses described a "terrifying" scene as police officers, some armed, descended on the area. "We heard shouting and saw people running," one onlooker told reporters. "The police were incredible, they moved in so quickly and told everyone to get inside the nearest shop. It was really frightening."
Shops and Restaurants on Lockdown
In a bid to ensure public safety, officers immediately cordoned off a large section of the square. Shops, restaurants, and the nearby Odeon Luxe cinema were instructed to lock their doors, effectively placing the bustling entertainment district into a temporary lockdown. The tense standoff was captured on video by members of the public. The footage shows a shirtless man, alleged to be the suspect, being confronted by a large number of police officers. After a brief period of negotiation, the man was subdued by a police dog and tasered before being arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and assaulting an emergency worker.
A London Ambulance Service crew was also on standby at the scene, though it is believed the suspect's injuries were not life-threatening. A Section 60 order, granting police enhanced stop-and-search powers, was authorised in the immediate aftermath to prevent any further violence.
